Q1. What should I avoid before ANA test?
A1. If your sample is being used only for an ANA test, you can eat and drink normally before the test. If your blood sample will be used for additional tests, you might need to fast for a time before the test. Your doctor will give you instructions.
Q2. Can an ANA test give a false negative?
A2. Because of a variety of technical factors, it is possible to have a negative ANA but a positive specific antibody test, though this is very uncommon. Thus an "ANA-negative" person with strongly positive antibody to Sm is said to have lupus.
Q3. What to do after positive ANA test?
A3. There is no specific treatment for a positive ANA because it is not diagnostic of any specific disease or condition. Talk with your doctor about whether certain lifestyle changes can help, such as regular exercise, good sleep and reducing or quitting tobacco and alcohol use.
Q4. Can ANA test results change over time?
A4. Tests often revert to normal during treatment, and they can change, improving or worsening, over time.
Q5. Are ANA tests always accurate?
A5. Sensitivity of reliable ANA testing is 97-99%.
